Remixxx

In Internet Culture, there is a lot of freedom as long as you respect the rules on which you share your ideas or opinions or whatever you want to. There is limited freedom when it comes to fear as well. This is because people feel insecure about what they want to share on the internet because they might be scared people are going to judge them online. Furthermore, you need to be careful with what you post because employers look you up all over the internet to see if you are a good candidate. This can cause risks because something you might have shared a long time ago on the internet is always going to be there as it can get shared countless numbers of times. In the internet, people can also bully or threaten and there are also hackers that can find out like you information such as your debit card information. The internet is another world but just like in the real world, you need to be cautious. I think copyright is good because people might try to take credit for your ideas and profit off of it rather than you profiting off of it like you should. I think its working fine because in my opinion its pretty strong in preventing others from taking your ideas. I used the public domain license because I didn’t feel like its something super important for me, however, I would probably change my mind if it turns out to be something where another person profits off of it. That’s why I at least signed my initials at the bottom but I don’t really know if that would protect my work since I don’t know much about copyright. This activity was interesting because you can literally combine any ideas and make it a remix. It reminded me of something abstract yet slightly realistic. I feel like it did come out as expected because I wanted to show how kids versus adults or teens spent their time a few years ago with kids playing with toys and adults using technology as it was starting to get advanced. I feel like this idea or topic can expand into a whole art gallery where different forms of this idea can be showed. For example, how adults spent their time in the 1950’s versus now. The activity and the experience was pretty interesting because it felt like a scavenger hunt to find things to help me make the remix art.

Artist Conversation #5

Artist: Kiyomi Fukui

Exhibition: Max L. Gatov Gallery Wes

Media: Plants, Paper Molds, Seeds

Website: kiyomifukui.com

Fiyomi Fukui is a Japanese-American artist that lives and works in Long Beach, CA and that focuses on projects that involves others participation to create art. Much of her art is autobiographical as she creates art based on her life like her relationship with her father and the passing of her mother. She received an MFA in Printmaking from California State University Long Beach and a BFA in Graphic Design from La Sierra University.

This art consisted of medians that aren’t “typical” for art. Fukui used seeds and molds of her mom’s and her own thumb to create a garden which she planted outside and into pots at an art gallery. Her art is large as it expands from each plant to the other in different pots and it consists of mostly green colors from the plants that grew. It is also small however because you would have to look in more closely to examine the molds and seeds sprouting as well as the texture of everything. It had a calm rhythm because the plants were fragile and and small. The texture varied because the plants, soil, and pots were all different but they all had a sort of soft texture when working as one.

This project was about her mother and how she wanted her mom to spread into others’ lives through the roots after her mother passed from cancer. She took molds of paper of her mom’s thumb and planted seeds inside to represent rebirth and the cycle of life. As an individual who is into the idea of printmaking and likes the ideas of multiples, she had many thumb molds because it would allow for her mother to spread more as she discussed being part of the concepts of the project. This project was something that helped her deal with the loss of her mother and it explored the ideas of loss but growth through a healing process like this where further feelings were produced by doing a daily activity like gardening.

To me, this project was important because I viewed it as a very efficient and creative way of dealing with the loss of a loved one. I thought it was beautiful because it was a way for her mother to continue living in not only her life but in the lives of others as well. I enjoy plants as well because I feel like each one has their own personality and just like the plants reminded her of her mother, the ones I have belong to my grandma who lives in Mexico so for me they serve a similar purpose of them being close to me. The calmness and fragility of the plant from the formal nature of the work and her ideas are something that resonate with me because those are things that remind me of my grandma and make it feel like she were here with me.

Graffiti Writing

I actually enjoyed this activity more than I thought I would. I watched the youtube videos to see how to do it but what I had to adapt to was the little lines inside the letters which made them look more like bubbles. The videos gave an example of just one word so I had to find out where the lines would look best which made me feel really creative. At first I just did the letters in green but then I remembered had to add more colors which I enjoyed because I feel like the colors I used worked really well with each other. Next time I would want to try to do graffiti but with spray paint rather than just a marker. However, I would want to do it more with markers first so that I can get practice and get better. This activity was simple but you can take it as far as you want to by using different medians and sending different messages in different places. I forgot to take more photos of the process of making it but I enjoyed it so much that I was really into it so I forgot. Next time, I would like to take more pictures because it would show the process and you would be able to see the different stages it goes through.

Sustainable Art

My idea was simple, really simple. It was trying to represent a child’s idea of a self portrait using beans. I think my art piece did represent my idea because it does look child like and even the sun that I put on the side is something that I recall adding in a lot of my childhood drawings. My choice of materials influenced my experience of my artwork because I felt like a child doing arts and crafts. It was like using little bits of pasta or macaroni when I was in kindergarten and would do some sort of drawing. It helped so that my art piece, which I would say is very low level, look like an actual art creation by a child. Kisses can last different amounts of time depending on the moment. Is it a first kiss? Is it a more sexual kiss? Is it a kiss goodbye? A time limit can’t be put on a kiss because it’s something you determine in the moment depending on would it be awkward if you go too long or too short. A great meal can last any amount of time as well. A great meal can be an hour and a half long for a five course meal with a date at a fancy restaurant. It can also last 40 minutes with friends before everyone has to go home. Ideally, a marriage should last forever, however, if the individuals realize they made a mistake it may be shorter. Furthermore, if one of the partners turned out to be a horrible person, it should last a little bit of time as well. There should be no time for how long life lasts. This is because of death. Death is what scares us but motivates us to as much as we can with our lives as we go therefore, there shouldn’t be a time on how long a life should last. The fact that some things have a finite time and then are gone does make a difference in the way we experience them because we will appreciate them more. We would be able to experience them with more meaning because we would know that we would only have it for a limited time. With something that would last an infinite amount of time, we would eventually get tired or bored of it and wan’t to move onto something else because perhaps it might not entertain us like it used to. With those finite things however, we will appreciate and care about them more because we know we could lose it at any moment. I believe that things like clean water, air, and land shouldn’t be sustainable and long lasting because then it will force us to think about the actions that humans take which affect these things. It will make us more mindful to limit our impact and try to reverse our effects as well. I believe one person does have the power to make a difference in a global problem like Climate Change because although one person alone might not make the difference, individuals united do. One person might plant one tree and so will another, but if it wasn’t for those individuals to make their own decision of planting a tree, there wouldn’t be two trees planted.

Simply Realistic Gallery

The idea I was trying to explore was about nature and its simplicity. Nature has so much to it, however it can be so simple at the same time and that’s what makes it beautiful. I am really into sunsets and the night sky and all these art pieces demonstrate these. Each artist had their individual styles but they all share this theme. They all show some sort of nature that go with the sky and surroundings in a simplistic way.

This artwork is from Luis Alvarez, a friend of mine who I would describe as energetic, child-like, and creative. He enjoys nature and art and that’s what I see here which he posted on Instagram. The main important points in his work would be the way that the bright blue sky and the shadows work together to create something realistic yet something like a memory. His work is simple as it is mainly the black and blue together in these pieces to show how beautiful nature can be which is what this theme is all about. The colors and objects are so simplistic yet they work together to have so much detail.

Susmita Malakar is an artist I discovered on Instagram and from her page I can tell that she is very into nature which can also be understood from her artwork. Some might say that her art is simple however, I feel like it captures a lot in a simple fashion. Like Luis Alvarez, she mainly used two colors in each art work where they both worked together to show the beauty of nature. For example, the yellow of the sun work well with the silhouette of the birds in a simple fashion which to be looks very appealing.

This artist named manok996 on Instagram has a slightly different way in which their art also shares this theme, however, it was still appealing with the use of primarily two colors. The second art piece of theirs shows this with the blue slightly pink sky and the yellow of the car and road that work together. The art piece is simple as there are few things in it but it is nonetheless a good portrayal of nature in a simple yet complex way like the other artists.

Vlogging

My goal with this video was to show myself mopping and sweeping and the specific way in which I do it. I wanted to clean at the same time because the floors were dirty so in this way I was killing two birds with one stone. I think I was successful because I showed all the parts of myself mopping and sweeping and I even pointed out the plants which I always take time to look at when I’m in that part of my house. Next time, I would probably pick a time where there was less background noise like my mom using the paper shredder, although it did give a more personal look into life at my home. I would vlog again because its a cool way to tell stories or just show people your life and look back at memories. My favorite youtube is Casey Neistat just because his content is very real and his videos are always about something important at least to him. and the way his final products look are amazing. From him, I can apply including video clips that don’t relate to the video specifically but improve the aesthetics. Authenticity is being your “true” self in your actions and words where you don’t try to hide anything like your flaws. Performance is how you behave in situations which aren’t always authentic because you might be trying to make a good impression at an interview or act all innocent when you probably aren’t the best person. I believe they exist together because you definitely can perform in your true authentic way but you can also stem away from that and be someone you aren’t. I feel like she is being authentic in both videos because she was just talking about her experiences. Authentic is to perform is your true self with trying to hide your flaws and she did mention personal things and flaws in both videos. She talks about regular things in her life so I would say she is being authentic and herself in both clips.

Drawing with my Brain

Drawing the campus map was more interesting than the other part of the activity. I feel like I did a pretty good job in creating the map although I know there are things I am missing but couldn’t remember what they really were. Drawing this map I feel was really just based on the different experiences I’ve had at school and all different from everyone else’s. That’s why I labeled laying down grass because I have gone to these areas and laid down on the grass. It’s also why I labeled fun skating because it truly describes my experience and the actual location of the campus. The spirograph activity was a bit more confusing as I didn’t really know what to do or what to expect to come from this. It was still a cool experience to just close your eyes and let the marker(in this case because I don’t have crayons or pastels) just move around and open your eyes to something that you weren’t expecting. These activities were overall pretty cool because it combined art and your brain and I’ve never thought about the role your brain plays in art rather I usually just thought of it as creativity and nothing more.

Artist Conversation #3

Artist: Sienna Browne
Exhibition: Product of the Pallet
Media: Lead
Gallery: Black Umbrella Tattoo and Art Gallery
Website: https://www.siennabrowneart.com/
Instagram: @siennabrowneart

Sienna Browne is a student working to attain a BFA at California State University where hopes to one day become an art teacher. This artists interest vary as she enjoys taking on different styles of art like surrealism, cubism, drawing and painting, and much more. She said she was a foist which is an individual that loves color because it draws you in to look at what’s in the art and ask yourself why you like it. She has worked on different ideas like food disorders, celebration, moving forward, and nuudles which is a word she came up with meaning a combination of a nude body and a noodle.

This art piece consists of black and white because it was drawn using lead. It has a lot of shading using lines to create the shades on the skin and on the bowl. It has a sort of negative or lazy tone to it because of the colors and a belly with rolls is the main thing that stands out to me. Aside from that is all the food that just seems to cluster up and overpower the belly.

This art piece was about food insecurities and she used her brother to show this as he was eating shirtless and in his underwear. They were thinking about how he was just relaxing and eating and although he didn’t really have such a big belly in real life she dramatized it to help demonstrate the theme of the piece. She faced her own struggle of food insecurities and eating disorders and so this piece had so much more depth to it that meets the eye. It demonstrates how eating sometimes makes people feel with food insecurities or eating disorders in a more visual way.

To me, it meant the way that food makes some people feel bad for eating or even how it gives some people comfort. The character in the drawing was just relaxing in their underwear eating food. It seemed like they had nothing on their mind except probably the television that they were watching and the food they were eating. It was a simple art piece but it had a lot to say with the color of the lead and the shading that was done. It gave a sad or unhappy mood but it also seemed chill and laid back. This reminds me of how I’ve felt sometimes both comfortable because I was just relaxing and eating while watching television or also feeling bad because I ate something that I probably didn’t really need to eat. I think this shows something very realistic but in a surreal way because of the food that was everywhere and seemed to overtake the individual in the drawing.

Romanticism Activity

A.

The stars are so bright

Making me blind

all through

the night

A.

The shooting stars

Gave me a wish

It seemed so bizarre

But I asked for a fish

A.

It’s all I want

Can I have it please

I’ll be so happy

And I’ll be at ease

A.

They’re so powerful

With strength in numbers and size

The stars are magnificent

So please

Can I get my fish?

In my song I was trying o think about being a little kid when I would look up at the stars and think how people would see a shooting stars and make a wish. I wanted a fish for a while as a little kid and this memory turned into the theme of my song because I saw the example of the Frozen song. I thought about how big stars are and how they light up the night with so much power. I tried to rhyme words that were at the end of the lines and I also thought it would be easier to write the song in my own format. If I just wrote verses through AAAA rather than include a chorus like if I wrote AABA because I’m not that musical and I would probably write something that I wouldn’t be as pleased with. It was sort of hard because writing a song actually requires a lot of creativity and imagination but I thought it was cool because it challenges you to be creative and use your imagination. I don’t think my song was super successful but I think it did focus on the basics of Romanticism where I wrote that a shooting star gave me a wish. I don’t think I’ll really write a song again because I’m a person that prefers to listen music rather than create it. If I did however, I think I would do it about the rain or riding a bike.

Counterfactual Identity

What I tried to do was look like a cowboy from Mexico. I dressed in my cowboy boots and hat from Mexico and wore a shirt that my grandma gave me. I went out to eat at Panera with my mom and my sister because I didn’t really want to go in a super public place because I didn’t want to feel super uncomfortable. When we went, I noticed a lot of people staring at me and I just tried to laugh about it rather than feel uncomfortable. I didn’t go up to anyone nor did I have anyone ask me about what I was wearing which I am glad because I’m not a super social guy. I did ask my friends through text by showing them the picture and they said I looked like I just came back from Mexico. In conclusion, I thought the project was pretty cool because it gets you out of your comfort zone. I thought it was also cool because you can become a completely different person but people in public won’t know that because you’re a complete stranger to them. Next time, I would probably just try to go to a more public area like the mall or the grocery store and ask people what they thought about me.
